The Shropshire Lad is a 45 foot canal boat designed for day trips for up to 12 people. The charge for the day hire of the Lad is £65 except for trips booked between 20 May and 1 September when the Lad can be hired for £70 per day.
The Lad has a ramp, hydraulic lift and hydraulic steering, in addition to the conventional tiller, which allow wheelchair users to take part in the running of the boat. Wheelchair users are able to access all parts of the Lad. The Lad has been designed to take wheelchairs up to a maximum width of 26” – the standard size for wheelchairs.
If there are wheelchair users in your party, comfortable numbers are 2 wheelchair users and 10 able bodied people.
One of the Trust’s volunteers can be your skipper for the day, at no additional charge, but it is your day out and your party will be encouraged to steer the boat themselves.
The Lad has a small galley (hob, fridge, crockery and cutlery) to allow lunches and/or refreshments to be prepared, toilet and seating area. The bow area of the Lad is covered by a canopy which can be removed to take in more of the scenery.
The Lad is normally available for hire from 10am till 6pm (at the latest). If you choose to have a Trust skipper the actual start time, journey plan, finishing time can all be agreed before the day as they will get in touch with you to make these arrangements.
There is ample parking available in the Trust’s own Wharf car park.
One of the Trust’s volunteers will meet you when you arrive and, if not acting as skipper, ensure you are familiar with the operation of the Lad before you set off. They will give guidance with suitable routes depending on the time available for your trip.
We do ask that at all times there is one designated person in command and that person is familiar with and adheres to all health and safety requirements. To ensure you are prepared for your day trip and enjoy the canal safely we recommend you read the Lad’s Handbook and the Canal & River Trust’s boater’s guide.
